The night air was cool, cooler than Rue's comfort zone as her swift legs carried her deeper into the forest. She didn't dare loom back behind her; she knew it would only slow her down. Her eyes were wide with terror but not blinded by it, and she managed to keep her head as she kept going, fleeing swiftly from the men chasing her. At one point she tripped over an upraised tree root and went crashing to the ground, skidding a few moments before she came to a stop. Heart racing, she could see lights in the distance. They were too close for her to try to keep running; plus they were much older, taller, than her small nine-year-old body, and it was impressive she has even made it this far. Eyes flying around the forest, she pulled herself to her feet. Darting to the closest tree, she pulled herself up, the branches clawing at her bare arms and legs, leaving bloody streaks behind. She was barely fifteen feet above the ground when the men appeared beneath her. She froze, huddling against the tree trunk, shivering from the cold and trembling from her fear. The men spoke in a strange tongue that was unfamiliar to her native, Irish speak, but she was sure the rest of her family would be able to place it. She flinched violently as one three something put into the darkness, his voice loud and angry, letting out a stream of what she guessed would be swear words, at her. She bit her lip to keep from crying, heart flying in her chest and pounding against her ribs, willing God to keep them from looking up if He had ever loved her. And they never did. She felt relief flood her mind and body as they continued going, disappearing into the darkness. She counted to a hundred before she slowly slid down from her hidden perch, careful to land in the soft forest soil where the noise would be muffled and there would be less chance of hurting herself. Shivering as she stared after where they had gone, she turned and took off back down the cross-crossing animal trails that weaves through the forest, following the heavy booted footprints back to where she had come from.
Before, the Humans had thought they had lived alone, that monsters were a myth, that Vampires and Werewolves were nonexistent. But now, those stories are becoming a known reality, and although not everyone knows the secrets, they are spreading as quickly as a wildfire, and soon everyone will know them. There are some, Mortals and Immortals alike, who are forming groups to prevent it, to keep the world safe in not knowing, but the other side, the Immortals who encourage it, who are thirsty for power, for a new age, is quickly growing larger and stronger, and it's only a matter of time before the boiling sides overflow into the other's territories...
